XIO – Endless Application Possibilities for the Control of Inputs and Outputs

In our blog posts last year, we already introduced the INTRON-X modules XCO and XDG. Today we want to proceed with the XIO – our I/O module.

XIOOur Module for Successful Input/Output Control

The XIO is used to read in inputs and switch outputs. One XIO module has 24 bidirectional potential-free control I/Os.
As the control inputs and outputs are divided into separate groups of 12, it is possible to connect two systems at different voltage potential to one XIO module.

The module has also 2 Ethernet interfaces which allow for a redundant network access. If one network interface fails, data is transmitted via the second one. The XIO has an automatic integrated self-monitoring function. So inputs and outputs, connection cables, and power supplies can be permanently monitored.
Together with flexible redundancy concepts (A+B and Hot-Standby) the XIO ensures continuous operation and maximum system availability.

Application Examples

Connection to F&G Systems

The XIO module is mainly used for the connection to a Fire & Gas system via contacts. This system controls a wide variety of warning sequences. It is possible to start the pre-programmed evacuation sequence manually or automatically.

Connection to Building Management Systems (BMS)

If no network-based interface such as ModbusTCP is available, analog connection via the XIO is a practical solution. PLC devices from building management systems, for example, can also be connected via I/O and thus exchange bi-directional control signals. This enables fire doors to be closed or an emergency shutdown to be transmitted to a BMS via a control signal in the event of an active alarm. Situation-dependent announcements are automatically issued, e.g., to prevent panic and significantly speed up evacuation through targeted instructions.

Monitoring Functions

It is also possible to integrate other systems into the INTRON-X monitoring via the inputs of the XIO. For example, fault messages from emergency power supplies, access control or CCTV systems can be read in and immediately transmitted to a control station.

Another option is the use of manual call points that, depending on the requirement, trigger a direct action or start an alarm only after confirmation from a control station.

Decentralized Installation

As the XIO communicates with the INTRON-X controller via Ethernet, there is also the option of a decentralized installation. It can be installed anywhere where network access is available.

In addition, a software logic module can be activated within the INTRON-X using the Config Manager X, via which all input signals can be evaluated and processed. This makes countless if-then scenarios possible.
