Intercom and PA/GA in One System – Exploit the Benefits

In the recent Intercom and PA/GA blog article, I already mentioned that you can combine the functionality of Intercom and PA/GA systems to provide one uniform system solution and thus be able to use synergy effects. But what are the advantages of such a system solution?

Control Functions and Interfaces

An advantage is that control functions can be used in everyday business as well as in case of emergency (e.g. opening and closing doors, windows and roof openings). In case of fire, doors that close automatically keep the exit paths free from smoke and toxic gases. Under normal working conditions, staff can open or close the same doors by simply pressing a key at an intercom station, depending on the situation. In both cases, the same contact is used.

The same is true of interfaces to third-party systems (e.g. telephone systems or management systems). Each interface must only be provided and configured once. The same interface is used for Intercom and PA/GA functions.

Investment and Operating Costs

Often costs play a big role. Above all, investment and operating costs are reduced, as you buy both system concepts in one combined solution. This may seem contradictory at first glance: You buy one system which combines 2 system concepts. You will get a bigger range of functions. And in the end you will save a lot of money?

But if you take a closer look, you will realize that investment costs for planning, project engineering, installation and commissioning arise only once.

Above all, operating costs for maintenance or service are much lower, as there is only one system that must be maintained. For 2 separate systems, this work must be performed twice.

And don’t forget your staff. If there is no previous knowledge, you have to develop in-house expertise and train your staff accordingly. This can mean twice the expense and time spent, as you’ll need separate training for 2 different systems.

Intercom Stations

For Intercom systems, intercom stations are used for process-related voice communication. The built-in speakers of the intercom stations can also be used for alarms, for example. Alarms and potential evacuation announcements are directly output over the intercom station and/or its additional speaker. This way, you’ll need less speakers.

Reliability

An reliable alarm system is essential for the protection of human lives and property. For that reason, it is possible to install Intercom and PA/GA systems redundantly. Further, many standards ask for a redundant design of PA/GA systems, anyway.

Conclusion

An intelligent and useful combination of both system concepts offers true added value. They protect human lives and property in dangerous situations and simultaneously ensure the process-related communication within the company.

Also existing intercom-only systems can be easily expanded by alarm and evacuation functions – and vice versa.

No matter which solution you choose: Be sure to let experts evaluate your individual project requirements and perform the subsequent engineering as well as the implementation.
