General project description

The NAFTEC Skikda Refinery was built in 1980 and is one of the largest refineries in Africa. NAFTEC SpA, a subsidiary to the government-owned Algerian oil company Sonatrach, is the operator of all refineries in Algeria. In 2008, NAFTEC decided to modernize, upgrade and expand the refinery in order to cope with the requirements of the local and the international markets in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

Project scope

  • Task: Engineering, delivery and commissioning support
  • System: Intercom, public address, general alarm and communication system
  • Scope of delivery/details:
    • A total of 5 INTRON-D central exchange cabinets connected via redundant fiber optic dedicated links. Each central exchange cabinet has its own power supply and battery back-up system.
    • 20 master intercom stations in the control centers
    • Approx. 20 desktop intercom stations for indoor use as well as 100 weather-proof and approx. 130 explosion-proof intercom stations
    • All outdoor intercom stations are equipped with flashing warning beacons, additional 25-Watt booster amplifiers as well as additional horn speakers
    • Interfaces to the fire & gas detection system and telephone system
  • Schedule: The order was received in May 2010, delivery at the end of 2010, commissioning in 2011
  • Parties involved in the project: EIL (Engineers India Ltd) – Project Management Contract, Samsung Engineering – EPC constructor. Order assigned by system integrator Vector Infotech, Singapore. Commissioning will be performed in cooperation with the local INDUSTRONIC partner in Algeria.

Special features

Based on the intelligent networking between the single systems, a cross-plant communication system was realized. Besides the process-oriented communication, a comprehensive warning and alarm system was integrated that puts high demands on the availability of all systems.
